Man on road In 1982-4, I did a few paintings on canvas. I lived in Indiana in a one-room apartment overlooking a liquor store parking lot. It was surprisingly quiet at night which let me focus without interruption. The 2 oil paintings on this page are from that time. My life in those years was marked by job change and moving about. The problem of slow-drying oil paint and lack of storage space made it impossible to continue painting. Whereas pencil on paper could be produced voluminously and stored easily. This painting suffers from a thin coat of paint with no underpainting. Each time I tried to add more paint, it changed relationships inside the painting and required everything to be painted again. |
